The good boss
Day 1
Employee:- I really need a leave tomorrow. Please, can you approve? However, that would be the last leave left for the rest of the year :(
Manager:- Are you crazy? It's too late to ask for one, don't you know that you need to give at least 48 hrs of notice. The manager thinks the job is done.
Sad employee ..potential resignation in the near future.. The end!
Day 2
Employee:- Calling boss.. He can't say no to sick leaves lol. I'm going to take sick leave.
Manager:- Upset and angry ... understaffed to manage the BAU operation :(
Employee:- Demotivated about the work environment .. The end!
If a manager thinks his only job is to follow the rules set up by the company, then a company don't need managers. Because it will be just reading out the rules to your line reports. So no value addition to the company.
Good managers use those rules and guidelines to safeguard both the company and the employee. That's the only way to build a motivated workforce.
So what could have done?
Day 1
Employee:- I really need a leave tomorrow. Please, can you approve? However, that would be the last leave left for the rest of the year :(
Boss:- Let me speak to you personally. I'm going to let you take sick leave tomorrow. However, it would be best if you make sure BAU work appropriately allocated, so we don't face any issues tomorrow. Company policy let you take eight sick leaves. I know you are going through a hard time these days. So I will help you out. If you are comfortable, I can further assist with your issues with HR assistance. We all have those down times.
Employee:- Feel safe and taken care. Motivated and willing to do his/her best to achieve company targets.
Sounds crazy..
This is why we need a value-based work environment rather depend on rules and conducts. Good managers have a sharp sense to work things out in favour of both employee and the company. Today most of the managers get blinded by the fact that they are only there to follow the rules.
